When you’re on a strict eating plan, an invitation to a party can set off a flurry of anxiety. How am I going to handle the assortment of drinks, cheeses, chocolates? Should I bring my own nush, eat before I go? Or, heaven forbid, should I back out? That way I know I’ll stay on my plan.
It sure feels good to control a situation. It feels like you’re getting the power back. Thought - party could tank my efforts, while staying home is predictable. But that “either-or thinking” misses the most important part about getting an invitation - it’s about creating a memory.
No one at a party really cares what you eat as long as you are enjoying yourself.
So give yourself permission to skip the bread or make drink spritzers or even sneak a bag of your “safe” treats. Your job is to be a good guest. It’s as simple as showing up, thanking the hosts, talking to their friends, and being present. What you do from there is up to you.
So the next time your brain launches you into a circle of self-doubt and panic about whether or not to attend a party, remember it’s really about the people, not the wine and cheese.
